Alison Riske Advances to 3rd Round of Wimbledon

USTA Southern has a strong presence at Wimbledon this year with eight players competing, six in the main draw and two in the Boys’ and Girls’ draw.

Opening play

Alison Riske of Hilton Head Island, S.C. will advance to the third round of Wimbledon following two great wins in the first and second rounds. Riske was leading her first round match 6-7(5), 7-5, 3-1 when 31st-seeded Romina Oprandi of Switzerland retired with an injury. Riske then went on to win one of the biggest matches of her career against 44th-ranked Urszula Radwanska of Poland 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Riske fell to Kaia Kanepi 6-2, 6-3 in the third round. Still a great Wimbledon run for Alison!

John Isner advanced to the second round of the tournament after winning straight sets against Evgeny Donskoy 6-1, 7-6(5), 7-6(3). 

John Isner was one of many injured in this year's tournament. He was forced to retire from his second round match after injuring his left knee during a routine serve.

Melanie Oudin lost a tough match 6(7)-7, 6-1, 4-6 against Michelle Larcher de Brito of Portugal. 

Oudin took the stage with partner Madions Keys in the double tournament, but lost in the opening round 6-4, 6-1 to  Tsvetana Pironkova and Yanina Wickmayer. 

Jamie Hampton fell to fellow American Sloane Stephens; losing 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of the tournament. 

Veteran Bobby Reynolds of AcworthGa., beat USA's Steve Johnson 1-6, 7-6(4), 6-3, 6(4)-7, 6-4 in the first round. Reynolds will face No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic in the 2nd round.

Reynolds fought a hard match against Novak Djokovic in the second round of Wimbledon, but ultimately fell to the world No. 1 7-6(2), 6-3, 6-1.

Mallory Burdette of Jackson, Ga. lost to Urszula Radwanske of Poland 6(3)-7, 6-4, 2-6 in the first round. 

Shreveport, La. native Ryan Harrison fell to Jeremy Chardy of Russia 6(4)-7, 6-4, 5-7, 2-6 in the first round. 

Taylor Townsend, formerly of Stockbridge, Ga. won her first round match in the juniors draw 6(3)-7, 6-4, 7-5 against Iryna Shymanovich of Belarus. She will face Sandra Samir of Egypt in the second round. Townsend was ranked No. 1 among juniors in 2012
