The Winston-Salem Open at Wake Forest University has released the playing field for the 2019 tournament, which will be held August 17-24 at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex. Competitors from the playing field acceptance list will occupy 38 of the slots in the tournament's 48-player singles draw.
Tomas Berdych, a former finalist and top five ATP player, has accepted the tournament's first wild card. Berdych, who lost in 2012 to John Isner in a three-set thriller, is returning to the world stage after recuperating from a back injury.
Each entrant into the 2019 field is inside the world's top 90 singles players. Six of the field made it into the Round of 16 at Wimbledon this year.
"We have an incredible playing field linedup for this year's Winston-Salem Open, including two players - Borna Coric and Nikoloz Basilashvili - who are currently ranked in the top 20. Another player to watch is Sam Querrey, who has been moving up in the rankings over the last few weeks," Winston-Salem Open Tournament Director Bill Oakes said. "In addition to well-known players, this year's field includes several rising stars who represent the future of tennis."
The remaining nine spots in the field will be determind in the coming weeks as three more players will be announced via wild card entries, four from qualitifying rounds and two through special exemptions. Still to come is the 26-team doubles field to be named closer to the tournament start date.
