WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AUGUST 10, 2021) - Fresh off an Olympic Bronze Medal from the Tokyo games, Pablo Carreno Busta will return to the Winston-Salem Open, which will be held at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex from August 21-28 adjacent to Truist Field.
The 30-year-old Spaniard took the Winston-Salem title in 2016 and currently sits at no. 11 in the FedEx ATP Singles rankings. He is the second-ranked Spanish player behind only world No. 4 Rafael Nadal and is just below his career high of 10, which he reached in 2017.
"We are thrilled to welcome back another former champion. Pablo has risen through the rankings and been a steady presence on tour. Our fans have responded well to him over the years, and he really makes a great addition to our strong 2021 field. He's a terrific guy, and I know fans will enjoy watching him again," says Tournament Director Jeff Ryan.
The field already includes former U.S. Open Champion Marin Cilic, popular Aussie showman Nick Kyrgios, 2015 Winston-Salem Open winner Kevin Anderson and American star and fan-favorite Frances Tiafoe. Other notable names are world. No. 25 Lorenzo Songeo, ATPNextGen star Carlos Alcaraz, 2018 Winston-Salem Open finalist Steve Johnson, 2019 Winston-Salem Open finalist Benoit Paire and veteran Richard Gasquet.
Three more singles wild card entries are pending.
The main doubles entry list is also available and the field includes defending champions (2019) Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo. The tournament will award two wild cards in the coming days.
