WINSTON-SALEM (August 3, 2018) - >In what promises to be a sizzling opening night at the 2018 Winston-Salem Open on August 19, fan favorites serve up some fun in Invesco Series QQQ match play.
The first match begins at 7:00pm as last year’s winner James Blake takes on another tennis icon, Michael Chang. Two American compatriots, Andy Roddick and Robby Ginepri face off in the match to follow.
Each match is one set, with the winners advancing to play in the finals.
“The tennis community always enjoys hosting these players. They’re such great ambassadors for our sport, and we love having them kick off the first night session at the tournament. It is such a great atmosphere for the fans and the players,” says tournament director Bill Oakes.
James Blake reached a career high of number four in the world, played in three Grand Slam quarterfinals, and won a Davis Cup title, with teammate Andy Roddick, in 2007. He took home 17 titles in his career and won the Champions Series event last year in Winston-Salem.
Michael Chang became the youngest Grand Slam winner in history at the 1989 French Open, when the fatigued and cramping 16-year-old upset Ivan Lendl in a thrilling five-set quarterfinal match. Chang played in three other Grand Slam finals and reached a career high of number two in the rankings.
Robby Ginepri reached a career-high of world number 15 and owns three ATP World Tour singles titles. His best result in a Grand Slam came in 2005 at the US Open where he ultimately fell to Andre Agassi in the semi-finals.
Andy Roddick is the 2003 U.S. Open champion, a former world number one, and Davis Cup champion. He finished nine consecutive seasons inside the ATP Top 10 and was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2017. He is also well-known for his powerful serve, hitting 155 miles per hour in the 2004 Davis Cup semi-final.
