Full Doubles Field
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – After the announcement of the 2016 Winston-Salem Open doubles field yesterday, Tournament Director Bill Oakes has added wild card duo Leander Paes and Andre Begemann to the field as wild card participants.
“A fan favorite for sure, we are excited to add Leander and Andre to our very exciting doubles field,” Oakes said of the addition. “We now have seven players that have previously won our doubles tournament in the draw this year and we’re thrilled to get the doubles competition started next Monday afternoon.”
Back in 2013, Paes partnered with Daniel Nestor and the top-seeded duo breezed to the final to beat Dominic Inglot and Treat Huey in straight sets. The following year, Paes partnered with David Marrero and again was the No. 1 seed in the tournament, but the two fell in the first round to Sam Groth and Chris Guccione
Both Paes and Begemann will be making their third appearance at the Winston-Salem Open in 2016, but this year marks the first time the two have played together at the tournament. Begemann will be making his second-straight appearance at the tournament. He competed with Henri Kontinen last year but the pair fell in the first round to Groth and Guccione.
Currently, Paes is ranked No. 62 in the world in doubles while Begemann is No. 159. Though the duo doesn’t have a title on the ATP World Tour this year, the two paired to win the Thindown Challenger Biella recently on July 31. Last week at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Paes paired with Rohan Bopanna but the two fell in the first round to Lukasz Kubot and Marcin Matkowski.
Paes and Begemann are the first of two doubles pairs that will earn entry into the main doubles draw via wild card. The second duo will be announced later this week.
