WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – With defending Winston-Salem Open doubles champions Dominic Inglot and Robert Lindstedt set to return to the WSO again in 2016, the tournament announced its doubles field Monday afternoon.
Overall, 18 of the 20 players coming thus far to compete at the Winston-Salem Open in doubles are ranked inside the top 63, with Daniel Nestor, Inglot, Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah each ranked inside the world top 30. Already this year, Cabal and Farah have won three titles together in Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro and Nice while Nestor has won two titles (one with Inglot in Nottingham).
Additionally, 2015 runner-ups Scott Lipsky and Eric Butorac will also be back again in 2016 after coming up just short one year ago. Lipsky is currently ranked No. 41 in the world and Butorac No. 45, and the two have taken one title this season in Estoril.
Overall, six of the 20 players announced Monday have previously been Winston-Salem Open doubles champions. Lipsky paired with Santiago Gonzalez in 2012 to win the title while Nestor joined Leander Paes to win the tournament in 2013. Cabal and Farah earned the championship in 2014 and Inglot and Lindstedt won the WSO in 2015.
“We’ve been blessed with a wide variety of excellent champions in the doubles tournament over the years,” said Winston-Salem Open Tournament Director Bill Oakes. “With our fans having the opportunity to meet and interact with the doubles champions on the court in previous years, the familiarity of having previously met them make it exciting to have so many excellent players back on court again here in 2016.”
On Friday, Nestor competed with fellow Canadian Vasek Pospisil and reached the bronze medal match. In the match, the two took on Steve Johnson and Jack Sock but ultimately fell to the American duo 6-2, 6-4.
Doubles action at the Winston-Salem Open is set to commence on Monday, Aug. 22, during Session 4 of the tournament. The tournament final will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27, prior to the singles championship, which will be contested no earlier than 2 p.m. later on Saturday.
