The Winston-Salem Open announced today the doubles player field for the tournament, which will be held August 16-23, 2014 at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex adjacent to BB&T Field. Five of the top 20 teams in the ATP doubles team rankings will be competing in the Winston-Salem Open.
The field of doubles competitors includes ten of the slots in the tournament’s 16-player doubles draw. Four additional teams will be determined during the tournament and two spots will be given to wild card teams.
“Treat Huey and Dominic Inglot, who were our finalists last year, will be back in our field this year,” Winston-Salem Open tournament director Bill Oakes said. “Treat and Dominic are ranked No. 18 in the world in the ATP doubles team rankings and have won three career titles together. Local fans really enjoyed the doubles action last year, and more thrills are in store for this year’s upcoming tournament.”
Jamie Murray, the brother of two-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray, is returning to the Winston-Salem Open for the third time. He was a semifinalist in doubles with Santiago Gonzalez in 2011. In addition, 2012 Winston-Salem Open doubles champions Scott Lipsky (USA) and Santiago Gonzalez (MEX) are returning to the tournament, but with different partners. Lipsky is teaming with big-serving Belorussian Max Mirnyi, and Gonzalez is playing with Austrian Oliver Marach.
As in past years, all fans who stay to watch the doubles final on Saturday, Aug. 23 will be invited onto the court to help present the trophy to the champions.
New this year, Winston-Salem Open fans will have the opportunity to take the court with some of the ATP’s top doubles players in a doubles pro-am on Sunday, August 17.
“We’re excited to give some of our local players a unique chance to play with the pros in our doubles pro-am,” Oakes added. “Having the opportunity to share a court with some of the top players in the world is pretty unique. It’s going to be tremendous fun, but slots for the event are quickly filling, so we recommend that people register soon.”
Pro-am participants will team with 12 players from the Winston-Salem Open doubles field for a fun morning of tennis from 10-11:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 17. Afterwards, participants will enjoy lunch and courtside seats for Sunday's day session of the Winston-Salem Open. Only a handful of spots remain at a cost of $1,000 per entry.
