Former champion Pablo Carreno Busta needed just 58 minutes to race through Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka 6-0, 6-3 to charge into the second round of the Winston-Salem Open Sunday.

One of four former champions in the draw, the 2016 titlist next plays 10th seed and 2023 champion Sebastian Baez. The 34-year-old Spaniard won 57 per cent of Nishioka’s first-serve points and dropped just eight points on his own serve.

Watch extended Sunday highlights from the Winston-Salem Open:

Botic van de Zandschulp, who last summer stunned Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets in the second round of the US Open, rallied from a set down to defeat Australian Adam Walton 2-6, 7-5, 6-3. The Dutchman, who served 15 aces according to Infosys ATP Stats, advances to play sixth-seeded Italian Matteo Arnaldi.

Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak, No. 88 in the PIF ATP Rankings, defeated Chilean powerhouse Nicolas Jarry, who has fallen to World No. 100, 7-6(6), 6-4. Majchrzak dropped just three points on first serve and did not face a break point. He next meets Portugal’s seventh seed Nuno Borges.

Former Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF champion Hamad Medjedovic got off to a winning start in his first visit to Winston-Salem, defeating Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech 6-3, 7-6(7) to reach the second round.

The Serbian claimed one break in both sets against Rinderknech, who last week upset former US Open finalist Casper Ruud in the first round of the Cincinnati Open. Medjedovic next plays 15th-seeded Briton Jacob Fearnley.

In the final match of the day, Mackenzie McDonald prevailed 6-4, 6-7(2), 7-6(2) in a pulsating all-American encounter with Brandon Holt. McDonald, who is making his main-draw debut in Winston-Salem, will seek to upset third seed Luciano Darderi in the second round.
