Late into Tuesday night and early into Wednesday morning, reigning Winston-Salem Open champion Lorenzo Sonego and Stefan Dostanic battled on Stadium court – with the Wake star looking to keep his impressive run of form after receiving a main draw wild card.
Sonego started the match picking up right where he left off in 2024 in Winston-Salem, jumping out to a quick one set advantage by taking the first 6-3. But Dostanic then came out firing to begin the second, jumping out to a 3-0 lead via support from an energized home crowd in Winston-Salem. Dostanic held on to claim the second set in a tiebreak, and had himself in position to win by jumping out to an early break of serve in the third set.
The Italian though was ultimately able to fight back and play spoiler to Dostanic’s Wake Forest homecoming party, clawing back in the third set to claim the match with a tight 7-6(4) tiebreak win in the third set – with the match spanning nearly three hours.
Sonego is officially back onto the winning foot in Winston-Salem and will meet No. 12 seed Jaume Munar in the next round on Wednesday, August 20.
