After hip surgery caused him to miss two years on the tour, Reilly Opelka is on the comeback trail.
The 26-year-old played his first tour-level event since August of 2022 earlier this summer in Newport, R.I. where made a run to the semifinals. Opelka rounds out the summer circuit after having competed in Atlanta and Washington in his efforts to prepare for the U.S. Open in New York.
Opelka had battled injuries with this foot and hip in 2015-16 and then contracted mononucleosis in 2018. After fighting his way back into the top 20 in 2022, enjoying a career high of no. 17 in the world, Opelka injured his hip and was forced to take time off.
“It’s nice to see Reilly healthy and starting to find his game again. We’re excited he’s come to Winston-Salem since we’ve never had a chance to host him before this year. He’s already enjoyed a couple of nice hits on the practice courts, and we think he’ll settle into the field well,” says Tournament Director Jeff Ryan.
Opelka marks the third of four main draw singles wild card entries in the 2024 event. American Chris Eubanks and Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo have also received entry into the main draw.
One main draw singles, two qualifying singles and one main draw doubles wild cards remain.
