Italian tennis continues to surge, and few players have ridden that momentum more impressively in recent months than Luciano Darderi. The 24-year-old has transformed from a dangerous clay-court outsider into one of the ATP Tour’s fastest-rising names, highlighted by a breakthrough run at the 2026 Italian Open in Rome.
Earlier this season, he reached the final in Buenos Aires and captured the ATP title in Santiago. His Rome campaign became the biggest tournament run of his career.
Darderi opened the tournament with a straight-sets win over Yannick Hanfmann, 6-4, 6-4, before defeating Tommy Paul 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the third round. But the defining moment came in the Round of 16 against world No. 3 Alexander Zverev. After losing the opening set 1-6 and facing four match points, Darderi produced a comeback to win 1-6, 7-6(10), 6-0. This was his first win against a top-10 opponent.
With this win, Darderi entered into his first Masters 1000 quarterfinal, where he defeated rising Spanish teenager Rafael Jodar, winning 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-0. The match stretched past 2 a.m. local time and was interrupted by rain, fireworks smoke, and technical delays, yet Darderi stayed composed and dominated the deciding set.
The Rome run finally ended in the semifinals against Casper Ruud, who overwhelmed Darderi 6-1, 6-1. Following the Italian Open, Darderi climbed to a career-high ATP ranking No. 16.
Darderi is set to appear at the 15th Winston-Salem Open, set for August 22 - 29 at the Wake Forest University Tennis Complex.
