Wake Forest’s Mees Rottgering sprinted into the second round of qualifying with a 6-1, 6-0 win over American Hunter Heck in less than an hour. The ACC Freshman of the Year and ACC Tournament MVP will play his next qualifying match against Hugo Grenier for a chance to enter the tournament’s main draw.

After a memorable run at last year’s tournament, Wake Forest tennis alum DK Suresh returned to the Winston-Salem Open courts today for a match against Roger Pascual Ferra. Suresh regrouped after dropping the first set and went on to win the next two tight sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Elsewhere in qualifying, American wild card Sebastian Gorzny won a three-set match against Australian Marc Polmans, while Wake Forest’s Luca Pow fell in straight sets to Felix Balshaw.

The tennis continues on Day 2 with the second round of qualifying and the first round of the main draw. Keep an eye out for wild card Cruz Hewitt, Americans Jenson Brooksby and Darwin Blanch, and 2016 Winston-Salem Open champion Pablo Carreno Busta.
