Wake Forest’s Mees Rottgering made his way into the Round of 16 with an impressive straight-set win over World No. 58 Tomas Machac. Rottgering got off to a fast start, taking the first set 6-2, before keeping the pressure on in a tight second set and pulling out the tiebreak to secure the victory.
Fellow Demon Deac DK Suresh wasn’t able to find the same success against Juan Manuel Cerundolo. After staying even throughout the opening set, Suresh fell in a close tiebreak before Cerundolo closed out the match 6-3 in the second. Despite the loss, Suresh put together an impressive week in Winston-Salem, earning his first ATP Tour main-draw victory.
The biggest upset of the day came during the night session, when American Martin Damm knocked off former World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev 7-5, 6-3. Damm used his big serve and powerful groundstrokes to keep Medvedev under pressure throughout the match, closing out the straight-sets victory in less than an hour and a half.
Elsewhere in the draw, the tournament’s other top seeds advanced, with No. 2 seed Luciano Darderi, No. 3 seed Ignacio Buse and No. 4 seed Arthur Fery all winning their matches to secure spots in the Round of 16.
